Electronic Device Policy

August 1, 2023

Parents/Guardians & Students:

Roosevelt Elementary School staff understand the need for cell phones to allow for communication and safety while students travel to and from school. However, in order to minimize distractions, academic dishonesty, bullying, and theft; Cell Phone/Electronic Device use is prohibited during the school day: 7:20am – 2:09pm.  Phones/Electronic Devices may not be used for any reason (including talking, listening to music, text messaging, checking the time, taking pictures/videos, viewing social media, etc…). This includes the use in hallways, restrooms, offices, or any other place on the Roosevelt Elementary campus during regular school hours. For this reason, all cell phones will be collected during admission and stored with Administration and/or the Dean of Students for the day. Students will receive phones back during dismissal. The pick-up location will be outside of the Bear’s Den near room 197. If a student needs to contact home, they may use the school phone in the Main Office, Dean of Students Office or Counseling Office(s).

Students who do not wish for their phone to be collected at the beginning of each day risk receiving a consequence if they are found in possession of the electronic device.  Students who violate the cell phone policy by using the device during the school day, will be issued the following consequence:

First Offense: Roosevelt Administration/Dean will confiscate the device and hold it until the end of the day.

Second Offense: Roosevelt Administration/Dean will confiscate the device and the student’s parent/guardian listed on the student’s school record may pick up the phone (with a picture ID) at their earliest convenience.

Third Offense: Roosevelt Administration/Dean will confiscate the device and the phone/electronic device will be returned to the student following completion of a scheduled after-school detention with the Dean of Students.

Fourth Offense: Roosevelt Administration/Dean will confiscate the device and the phone/electronic device will be returned to the parent following completion of a mandatory parent meeting. Recurring offenses (5+) can/will result in Saturday School with designated personnel.

Please understand that any images, videos, or social media comments that occur during the school day could be referred to the police and used as evidence during investigatory processes.

As a reminder, students bring electronic devices to school at their own risk.  The School District of Philadelphia, Roosevelt Elementary, its faculty, and staff are not responsible for any theft, damage, or missing electronic devices.

Thank you in advance for adherence with our policy!
